Chapter 9: Russia’s Agri-Food Trade with the Middle East and North Africa

Abstract The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is the top destination for Russian food exports, grains in particular. Focusing on Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, this chapter shows that Russia’s trade with MENA countries strongly affected by bilateral political relations. Russia banned most imports from Turkey over a conflict 2016. In same year, improved intergovernmental cooperation Arabia resulted diversification of exports to Gulf country, 2019, Iran’s accession Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) led increasing Russia. Food are usually managed powerful state trading enterprises (STEs), which recurrently disapprove products originating based non-adherence quality standards. Our analysis successfully working open additional markets, while simultaneously impeding it aims produce domestically.
